SATURDAY SESSIONS

Saturday, January 25, 2025

Conference Registration at 7:30 a.m. Conference starts at 8:00 a.m.

State of the State of EMS

Presented by: The NYS Department of Health

Discussing Issues of EMS in NYS. Question & Answer Portion.

Drowning and Management of Submersion Injuries

Presented by: Dan Batsie, Deputy Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Public Safety

Each year roughly 4000 patients die, and 800,000 patients are successfully rescued following a drowning event. Yet, submersion injuries remain poorly understood and are often improperly assessed and treated. To optimize outcomes and to separate commonly held myth from fact, providers must understand the true pathophysiology and science behind these far too common drowning situations. This class will discuss the evidence-based best practices associated with management of submersion injuries. Specific focus will be offered to submersion related cardiac arrest and how the approach must differ from more frequent sudden cardiac arrest etiologies. The class will also discuss a detailed evaluation of the rescued patient and describe an algorithm for treatment and transport decisions. Although some advanced topics will be discussed, this class is focused at the EMT level.

Croup!! There it is!!

Presented by: Ken Thompson Firefighter, EMS Provider/Speaker & flight paramedic (FP-C)

This session is designed to help First Responders, EMT’s & Paramedics, Dispatchers, Firefighters and Fire Chiefs better understand the differences between Croup & Epiglottis in Peds, as well as discussing RSV and Asthma.

Shots Fired: Characteristic Injuries Associated with Gun Violence

Presented by: Dan Batsie, Deputy Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Public Safety

Each day in the United States, over 300 people are shot and injured by firearms. Of that 300, 100 victims will die. EMS is on the front lines of the epidemic of gun violence and more and more we are called to respond to its tragic aftermath. Today’s provider must have a clear understanding of how ballistic trauma differs from the more routine trauma associated with falls and motor vehicle crashes. This class will discuss the most common injury patterns associated with bullet wounds and describe best practice assessment and treatment of patients injured by firearm. Although some advanced topics will be discussed, this class will focus primarily on the BLS scope of practice.

Prehospital Emergency Childbirth

Presented by: Ken Thompson Firefighter, EMS Provider/Speaker & flight paramedic (FP-C)

Prehospital OB complications can be scary! This class is a refresher designed to help clinicians remember the strategies used for complex field deliveries. Whenever a baby is delivered by an EMS crew, it is unscheduled and not as planned. While new EMT's are excited to deliver their first baby, experience tells us it isn't always easy, and occasionally is a life or death situation.

This class is Hands-On Training, along with lecture and discussion. In this class we will discuss the stages of birth, clamping & cutting the cord, Nuchal Cord, Breech presentation, Fetal Head Entrapment, Postpartum Hemorrhage, Shoulder Dystocia, and techniques for handling each situation. This class is appropriate for all levels. "The farther you get from your last field birth, the closer you get to your next one!"
