The fire service of today is much different than it was ten years ago. Hazards have changed, techniques have changed, technology has changed, and the political climate has changed. About, the only thing that has remained consistent, is our lack of tolerance for change. When I joined the fire department, I remember my dad saying, “don’t let them talk you into air packs, those things are dangerous”. “All they do is give you false confidence to go places you shouldn’t be”. Now thirty years later we wouldn’t even consider putting out a dumpster fire without one. In this 120- minute presentation we will talk about where we have been, and explore where we are heading. These changes have never been easy and that is not going to change. It is hard to prepare your kids and grandkids for the challenges they will face if we don’t spend time understanding our own.
